#120CowboyTough, Kickoff Week: We've Still Got The Boot
Aug 26, 2013
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
We've Still Got The Boot
For the last four seasons, the Bronze Boot has resided in Laramie. Cowboy fans wouldn't have it any other way. In each season since 2009, UW head coach Dave Christensen's first year, Wyoming has posted victories in the Border War versus Colorado State.
In Christensen's first game in the series, his Pokes won a 17-16 nailbiter after booting a 33-yard field goal with 1:27 left in the game. Linebacker Ghaali Muhammad sealed the win after picking off a CSU pass with just 31 seconds left.
The next season, UW had little trouble dispatching the Rams, winning 44-0 on the strength of five rushing touchdowns from running back Alvester Alexander.
In quarterback Brett Smith's freshman season of 2011, he led the Pokes to a 22-19 come-from-behind win on the road, throwing for two scores and 191 yards. Holding a narrow 20-19 lead with just 2:43 left in the game, defensive tackle Mike Purcell sacked the CSU quarterback in the end zone for a safety, which proved to be the final margin.
The most recent game in the series was exciting from the start, as UW built a 28-14 lead in the first half and cruised to a 45-31 victory. Smith was stellar, going 19-for-32 for 235 yards and four TD passes.
The Pokes battle the Rams in Laramie on Oct. 19 this season in War Memorial Stadium.
About the #120CowboyTough Countdown
The 2013 season will mark the 120th anniversary of Wyoming Cowboy Football. To commemorate that anniversary, we will be counting down some of the great memories and moments from Wyoming football history over the next eight weeks leading up to the Cowboys' season opener at Nebraska on Aug. 31.
The 2013 "Countdown to Kickoff" will take Wyoming fans through Cowboy Football history chronologically. The first week will highlight some of the memorable moments from the period from the first season in 1893 through the 1940s. Then each successive week, the countdown will recall great moments from the 1950s, `60s, 70s, 80, 90s, 2000s and the current decade.
Our countdown will only touch on some of the greatest moments, but we encourage you, the Wyoming fans, to share your favorite memories through the official University of Wyoming Athletics Twitter (@wyoathletics) and Facebook pages (Wyoming Cowboys). Fans are encouraged to use #120CowboyTough when sharing their memories.
Enjoy the countdown, and we look forward to seeing you in War Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 7 for the home opener versus the Idaho Vandals.
