Wyoming's Brett Smith Named One of Manning Award "Stars of the Week"
Sept. 24, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
On Monday, Wyoming sophomore quarterback Brett Smith was selected by the Manning Award as one of its nine "Stars of the Week". That makes Smith eligible for this week's Manning Award Player of the Week, which is determined by fan voting.
Wyoming fans may go online at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for Smith.
Voting is open from Monday through Thursday at 10 a.m., Mountain Time each week. The top vote-getter will then be announced as the Manning Award Player of the Week.
A year ago, Smith was voted the Manning Award Player of the Week for his performance in a 30-27 win over San Diego State.
Smith was also the only sophomore in the nation named to this year's Manning Award Preseason Watch List. The Manning Award honors the top collegiate quarterback in the nation at the conclusion of each season.
This past week, Smith threw for career highs in passing yards (365) and touchdown passes (5) as he led Wyoming to a 40-37 overtime road win at Idaho. His 365 passing yards rank as the best single-game performance in the Mountain West this season and the 18th best performance in the NCAA this season.
Smith completed 65.7 percent of his passes (23 of 35) versus the Vandals, and guided Wyoming on scoring drives of 75, 90, 97 and 78 yards. Smith added 22 yards rushing for 387 yards of total offense on the day - his second best total in his college career.
In overtime with Wyoming trailing 34-37 following a Vandal field goal on its first possession of OT, Smith threw to the end zone on the Cowboys' first play of overtime and hit sophomore Jalen Claiborne on a 25-yard TD pass to give the Cowboys the win.
