Wyoming and Utah Meet Saturday, the 82nd Homecoming Game in UW History
Oct. 12, 2006
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming Homecoming 2006 takes place this Saturday, marking the 82nd Homecoming in school history. For the 57th year, Wyoming is playing its Homecoming game in War Memorial Stadium.
Saturday's opponent for the Cowboys is the University of Utah. The Cowboys and Utes have been playing each other almost as long as Wyoming has held Homecoming. This year's meeting between Wyoming and Utah will mark the 79th between the two long-time Rocky Mountain rivals. It is the second longest rivalry for the Cowboys -- second only to the Pokes' series versus Colorado State which will mark its 98th meeting later this season.
Saturday's game versus Utah will kick off from Jonah Field at Wyoming's War Memorial Stadium at 1:00 p.m., Mountain Time.
In 81 previous Homecoming games, UW has won 39, lost 39 and tied three games. Since moving into War Memorial Stadium, the Cowboys have been more difficult to defeat on Homecoming, winning 62.5 percent of their Homecoming games with a record of 34 wins, 20 losses and two ties.
Wyoming brings a record of 2-4 overall, 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference into Saturday's game. The Cowboys are coming off their first Mountain West victory of the season, having defeated New Mexico by a score of 14-10 in Albuquerque last Saturday.
Utah is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the MWC this season. The Utes also enter Saturday's game following a Mountain West Conference win last week. Utah defeated TCU, 20-7, in Salt Lake City a week ago.
The two schools have played two common opponents thus far this season. Both Wyoming and Utah have defeated Utah State, while losing to Boise State. Wyoming defeated the USU Aggies 38-7 in Laramie. Utah also captured a victory over Utah State -- 48-0 in Logan, Utah. The Cowboys lost a close 10-17 contest at home to current No. 19 Boise State, while Utah lost at home to the Broncos by a 36-3 final score.
Two of the nation's top defensive backs and two of the most versatile players in the Mountain West Conference will be featured in Saturday's Wyoming-Utah game.
Both Wyoming senior strong safety John Wendling and Utah senior cornerback Eric Weddle were named to the 2006 Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, which honors the top defensive back in the nation at the conclusion of each college football season. They were two of only 32 individuals in the nation to be named to the watch list. Both Wendling and Weddle were also voted Preseason First Team All-Mountain West Conference by MWC media. Both have played multiple positions in their respective defensive secondaries. Wendling was ranked as the No. 16 best free saftey in the nation by Phil Steele's College Football Preview prior to the start of the 2006 season. Weddle was named preseason All-American by Athlon, CBS Sportsline and Sporting News.
The Cowboy Sports Network radio broadcast will begin at noon, Mountain Time, and will be carried on the 26 affiliate stations of the Cowboy Sports Network.
