Wyoming's Brett Smith Named Manning Star of the Week For the Second Time This Season

The Manning Award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, announced on Monday that Wyoming junior quarterback Brett Smith was named one of eight Manning Stars of the Week for his performance last Saturday in a 38-31 home win over New Mexico to give Wyoming the lead in the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division at 2-0. This is the second time this season that Smith has been named a Manning Award Star of the Week.

Smith accounted for 385 yards of total offense, rushed for two touchdowns and passed for a third in leading Wyoming to the home win over the Lobos.

Smith's performance, included 138 rushing yards, 247 passing yards and three TDs responsible for. He led all rushers in the game with his 138 yards, only two yards shy of his career best, and averaged 9.9 yards per carry on 14 carries. His two touchdown runs came in the fourth quarter from three yards and 48 yards out to give Wyoming a 38-24 lead with 8:53 remaining in the game. That 48-yard run proved to be the game winner.

Through the air, Smith connected on 19 of 33 pass attempts for 247 yards, including one TD pass of 26 yards to Jalen Claiborne in the second quarter to give Wyoming a 21-0 lead at that time. He was sacked only once on the day and did not throw an interception.

The junior generated big play after big play on Saturday, including nine plays of 19 yards or more. Of those nine explosive plays, seven were pass plays and two rushing plays. The seven big pass plays included: a 30-yard pass to Trey Norman, a 23-yard pass to Robert Herron, a 26-yard TD pass to Jalen Claiborne, a 21-yard pass to Dominic Rufran, a 19-yard pass to Norman, a 20-yard pass to Brandon Miller and a 35-yard pass to Claiborne. Smith's big rushing plays included a 22-yard rush down to the New Mexico 11-yard line that set up Wyoming's first touchdown of the game, and his 48-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that ended up being the game winner.
