Nov. 28, 2011
LARAMIE, Wyo. - University of Wyoming senior punter Austin McCoy was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his performance versus Boise State.
McCoy enjoyed his best day of the season last Saturday at Boise State. In the first half, he placed two punts inside the 10-yard line and a third inside the 20-yard line versus the Broncos, significantly limiting Boise State's field position. His punting helped enable the Cowboys to hold a lead over BSU until the 1:10 mark of the first half.
His first punt of the day went for 52 yards and was downed on the Boise State four-yard line. He followed up that punt with a 55-yard effort that was downed on the Boise State three.
In the second quarter, McCoy recorded a 48-yard punt that was fielded at the Boise seven-yard line and was returned only to the 16-yard line.
The second half featured McCoy adding two punts of 42 yards each. He averaged 43.7 yards punting on the day, and in addition to placing three punts inside the Boise State 20-yard line he limited Boise to a total of 15 punt return yards on two returns.
This was McCoy's first MW Player of the Week honor this season, and the third of his career. He has earned the honor once in each of the past three seasons.
