Feb. 20, 2002
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team finds itself in 19th place after the first round of the University of Hawaii John A. Burns Intercollegiate played on Wednesday. It is the Cowboys first tournament of the 2002 spring season.
Wyoming shot a first round 317, 29-over par, on the Leilehua Golf Course on the island of Oahu. Senior Mike Urbatchka shot the low round for the Cowboys with a four-over par round of 76. The tournament is a three-day, 54-hole event.
"This is our first time outside for the spring season," said first-year UW head coach Joe Jensen. "We hit the ball really well off the tee, but you could tell we were playing our first round of tournament golf in several months. We made some mental mistakes, and missed some putts we wouldn't normally miss.
"I know the guys were disappointed they didn't play a better first round, but I just want them to focus on improving each round of this tournament. We have two more days of competition, and we have a lot to play for. This is an excellent tournament field, and we can gain a lot from playing against a strong field like this one."
San Diego State leads in the team competition, firing an opening round 14-under par 274. John Lieber of SDSU shot a blistering seven-under par 65. He leads Auburn's Kevin Haefner, who posted a four-under par 68.
The tournament is being played on the Leilehua Golf Course, which measures 6,917 yards and plays to a par of 72.
