The University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team opened their spring season on Tuesday with 36 holes at the Pioneer Classic in Goodyear, Arizona. Despite several career-best scores, UW sits in 13th place of 15 teams in a very competitive field after one day of competition. Wyoming has a two round total of 591 (+15).

Wyoming was led by redshirt junior Dan Silva who shot scores of 73 (+1) and 68 (-4) and is tied for seventh place of 91 golfers after the first two rounds. Silva's second round score of 68 is his career low. UW also tallied a score of 68 from sophomore Jeff Franks in his first round, which ties his career best. However, Franks could not maintain his momentum and slipped into a tie for 29th with a second round of 77.

"This is our first competitive round since last fall and I'm not surprised that we were inconsistent," said UW head coach Joe Jensen. "This has been, and will be a good week of practice for us. We will get our feet under us and see where we're at.

"This tournament has a really good field with many NCAA tournament teams. UTEP is ranked sixth in our district and we are only two strokes back of them, so we can make up some ground tomorrow by playing hard."

Wichita State is the team leader by 22 strokes after the first day of competition with a score of 549 (-27). The Shockers also boast the individual leader in Judd Easterling who leads the field by seven strokes with a two round total of 131 (-13).

The Pioneer Classic is being played at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear. Palm Valley plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,015 yards.

Each team played five golfers and counted the four best scores. The final 18 holes will be played on Wednesday.
