LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The University of Wyoming Cowboy golf team finished two rounds on Monday at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Collegiate in 15th place. After team scores of 309 and 302, Wyoming remains only 12 strokes out of fifth place in the tightly packed 16-team field.
"I am very encouraged by everyone's attitude," said Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen. "We are so close to everyone playing well at the same time and we just need to continue to fight through our early season rust.
"A couple of the guys were hurt by two or three tough holes and we will come out tomorrow, play hard and try to eliminate those big numbers.
"We are right in the hunt for a good finish, especially since we have beaten several of these schools (Arkansas State, Oral Roberts) earlier this year at Louisville."
Sam Houston State holds the team lead after 36 holes with a score of 583 (+7), two strokes better than Houston.
The Cowboys were led by a freshman on Day One, as Canadian Dave Stewart fired scores of 74 and 72 to tie himself for ninth of 86 individuals. Stewart's two-round total of 146 (+2) is nine strokes off of the individual lead. Junior Eric Baily also shot two rounds in the 70's for UW and is tied for 33rd. Baily scored a 75 and a 76.
On a difficult golf course, which saw only six collegiate golfers shoot par or better, Sam Houston State's Robert Gwin held the individual lead after Day One with a total of 137 (-7). UALR's Patrick Sullivan is in second place with a score of 139 (-5).
The UALR Collegiate is being played at the Chenal Country Club in Little Rock, Ark. Chenal plays to a par of 72 and measures 7,221 yards.
