LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboys moved up three spots in the second of two rounds played at the UC Santa Barbara Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Monday. UW fired a second round 288, improving by nine strokes over its opening round 297. Wyoming is tied with New Mexico State for 17th in the field of 21 teams entering Tuesday's final round. Wyoming posted a 36-hole total of nine-over par 585.
Four of five Cowboys shot between one-under par and one-over par in Monday's afternoon round. Sophomore Jonathan Shuss led the charge with a one-under par round of 71. Senior Kurt Kowaluk and junior Jason Aichele both shot even-par rounds of 72, and redshirt freshman Eric Baily posted a one-over par round of 73.
Kowaluk and Aichele are tied for 53rd place in the field of 108 golfers. Their one-over par totals of 145, through the first two rounds, have them within four strokes of the Top 25. Nick Watney of Fresno State leads the tournament with a 13-under par total of 131.
Watney led his Fresno State team to a tie for the lead in the team competition with UC-Irvine at 21-under par 555.
"We improved throughout the day, which was encouraging," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Kurt (Kowaluk) and Jason (Aichele) both played two solid rounds, shooting identical rounds of 73 and 72 in the first two rounds of the tournament. Eric (Baily) improved throughout the day, with a round of 77 in the morning and 73 in the afternoon. Jonathan (Shuss) came back with an outstanding 71 in the afternoon for our lowest round of the day, and Niel (King) also had a nice round of 74 in the opening round.
"We are still looking to improve our consistency. This is a strong field and the playing conditions today were ideal, so there were some really low scores shot."
The field is an extremely strong one, with six of the 21 teams ranked among the Top 50 in the nation and eight in the Top 100. Leading the ranked teams is No. 31 California, No. 36 UC-Irvine, No. 38 Colorado State, No. 39 Fresno State, No. 46 Denver and No. 49 UTEP.
The first two rounds of the UC Santa Barbara Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate were played on Monday, March 31 at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara, Calif. The course measures 7,068 yards and plays to a par of 72.
Wyoming will conclude play at the UCSB Bite/Pacific Coast Intercollegiate on Tuesday, April 1.
