Wyoming Cowboys Finish Fifth at the Inaugural Cowboy Classic
April 16, 2003
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
It was a successful trip for the Wyoming Cowboys as they traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz., on Tuesday and Wednesday to host the inaugural University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic. Wyoming placed fifth out of 11 teams and had three individuals finish in the Top 15 in the field of 58 collegiate golfers.
The Cowboys shot a final round 297 on Wednesday to conclude the 54-hole event with a total of 887 . Arizona State's junior varsity team overtook San Diego State's JV team to win the team title 871 to 873. ASU trailed SDSU by two strokes heading into Wednesday's final round. The Sun Devils fired a final round nine-over par 289, while San Diego State shot a 13-over 293.
UW's Matthew Brunk, Kurt Kowaluk and Jason Aichele all finished in the Top 15 individuals. Brunk tied for fifth with a three-round total of 219 -- nine-over par. Kowaluk was one stroke back at 220 and tied for seventh, and Aichele finished in a tie for 13th at 221.
Rounding out the five-man team for the Pokes were Jonathan Shuss and Dan Silva, who both tied for 36th place, with 231 scores.
"We're closer to playing the type of consistent golf as a team that we need to, to be successful," said Wyoming men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "Although Arizona State, San Diego State and Arizona didn't have their full varsity teams competing, they each had two to three varsity players compete in this tournament, so the field was a good one.
"We were in position going into the final day to have a top three finish in a quality field. We couldn't quite hang onto third in the final round, but it was good experience to have our kids playing with the tournament leaders in that final round, That type of experience is what we need, as a young team, as we draw closer to the conference tournament.
"It was good to see Matthew (Brunk) play three good rounds. Kurt (Kowaluk) and Jason (Aichele) also had nice tournaments."
The first annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic was played at the Talking Stick Golf Club North Course in Scottsdale, Ariz. Talking Stick North was recently ranked as the No. 1 public course in the state of Arizona by Golfweek magazine.
The course measured 7,133 yards and played to a par of 70.
Next up for the Cowboys will be the Brigham Young Cougar Classic on April 25 and 26 in Provo, Utah. Following the Cougar Classic, the Pokes will travel to Sunriver, Ore., to participate in the 2003 Mountain West Conference Championship on May 1-3.
