SUNRIVER, Ore. -
The University of Wyoming Cowboy golfers shot a second round score of 303 (+15) on Friday at the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championship. UW's unexpectedly high 36-hole total of 605 (+29) puts them in eighth place in the nine team field.
Defending team champion New Mexico (567) holds a seven stroke lead over San Diego State (574). The Lobos shot 283 (-5) on day two and the Aztecs made a big move with their mark of 280 (-8). TCU (576) maintained their third place position, while BYU (579) dropped from a first place tie to fourth. UNLV (581) is fifth, followed by Colorado State (584), Utah (599), the Cowboys and Air Force (614).
TCU's Drew Stoltz used a score of 70 (-2) to give him a total of 141 (-3) and sole position of the individual lead. In a tight race for medalist honors four golfers are one stroke back at 142 (-2) and another six are at 143 (-1).
"We are extremely disappointed and humbled by this experience we're having," said Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen. "Our results are not indicative of the type of team we have. This is a tough deal, but we'll try and finish with a strong round tomorrow."
UW junior Jeff Franks and senior Dan Silva each improved on their first round scores with marks of 74 (+2) on Friday. Franks is tied for 26th in the field of 45 golfers with a total of 149 (+5). Silva is tied for 30th at 150 (+6).
Cowboy seniors Eric Baily and Matthew Brunk have two round totals of 153 (+9), while Jonathan Shuss has totaled 157 (+13).
The event will conclude on Saturday at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore. The final round of 18 holes will begin with tee times at 10 a.m. (MT). Wyoming will be paired with Utah and Air Force for the second straight day.
