May 7, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. (May 7, 2010) - University of Wyoming's Gabe Maier shot a 69 (-2) during Friday's second round of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Men's Golf Championship and will enter Saturday's third and final round in a tie for 10th place.
By shooting 69 on Thursday, Maier improved his tournament score to a one-under par 141. That total score is tied with two other golfers for the 10th best total in the field. Maier will enter Saturday's final round six strokes off of the leader and two strokes behind the top-three players. The junior from Cody, Wyo., who entered the event with the fourth best stroke average in the MWC, shot a 72 (+1) during Thursday's opening round.
Despite finishing four strokes lower than their first round score, the Cowboys suffered a setback in the team standings and fell from sixth to eighth place. The Pokes combined to shoot a second-round 299 (+15) on Friday and now have a two-round score of 602 (+34). Fortunately, they could still make ground during the final round as they are currently only 11 strokes behind fifth place.
Redshirt freshman Clinton Boutelle continues to be the Cowboys' second best player. Also a Cody, Wyo. native, he is currently tied for 29th place with a two-round score of 152 (+10). Boutelle shot a 77 (+6) on Friday.
"I am very proud of Gabe and I am not going to count him out of the race," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "He knows he has to go out there and play well, but he is a national-caliber player and is capable of competing to be one of the top golfers in this league. He has an advantage that we get to tee off early, so he can hopefully post a good number and then sit back and watch the rest of the field.
"As for the team race, all five guys need to come out and play hard tomorrow. We are within 11 strokes of the top-five and we are going to play with the intention of catching the top-five of this field."
Colorado State, which is ranked No. 35 in the national GolfStat rankings, continues to lead the event with a two-round score of 557 (-10). Colorado State is followed by No. 12 UNLV (561, -7), No. 31 San Diego State (562, -6), No. 54 BYU (566, -2), No. 24 TCU (591, +23), Air Force (596, +28), No. 45 New Mexico (600, +32), Wyoming 602 (+34) and Utah (609, +41). The MWC features five teams that are currently ranked in the top-54 of the nation.
Colorado State's Ryan Peterson took sole control of the individual lead after shooting a second-round 65 (-6). Peterson has a two-round total of 135 (-7). San Diego State's Tom Berry is in second place (136, -6) and UNLV's Derek Ernst is in third place (139, -3).
For the fourth consecutive year, the MWC Championship is being played at OMNI Tucson National Golf Course. The course measures 7,144 yards in length and plays to a par of 71.
The championship will conclude on Saturday with a final round of 18 holes. The Cowboys will be paired with New Mexico and Utah and will begin teeing off at 8 a.m. (Mountain Time). Live results may be followed at www.theMWC.com and www.golfstat.com.
