Cowboys in Second-Place After Day One of Battle in the Tetons

The Wyoming golf team opened their season with a strong showing on the opening day of the Battle in the Tetons, Monday at Headwater Golf Club in Victor, Idaho. The Cowboys, who are the defending champions, shot a 580 (+4) in first two rounds of play as they sit in second-place behind leader Utah Valley as they finished their opening day with a score of 577 (+1). Senior Eddie Stewart, the defending individual champion sits in a tie for first-place after firing rounds of 73 (+1) and 68 (-4) as he record 141 (-4) strokes on the day.

"We had a couple of good days of training here, but it rained all day today and it caught us by surprise and we didn't get off to the best start, Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen said. "We played better in the afternoon and know we have to go take care of business tomorrow, because we would love to defend our title."

Stewart, the defending champion battled back after his opening round of 73 (+1) to earn a tie for first-place after he carded a score of 68 (-4) in the afternoon. The Cowboy's leader is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Hudson Carpenter of South Dakota State and Brayden Eriksen of Utah Valley.

"Eddie went out and played solid golf today and I know he would love to defend his title and the team title." Said Jensen.

Sophomore Kamrin Allen finished the day with at 143 (-1) as he is currently in a tie for fourth-place. Allen shot a career-best and tournament best 66 (-6) in the second round as he sits two strokes back of first-place. Newcomer Cameron Lindell shot 150 (+6) on the day, he finished his day by shooting a 71 (-1) in the second round. Lindell is followed by Brent Baylon at 152 (+8) and Eric Parish152 (+8).

UW shot a team score of 301 (+13) in the opening round in the morning and followed that with a round of 279 (-9) in the afternoon. The Cowboys sit three strokes behind Utah Valley as the Wolverines shot a score of 577 (+1) for the day. Wyoming is eight strokes ahead of third-place Southern Utah as they carded a 588 (+12) for the first two rounds. Weber State turned in a 589 (+13) as they sit in fourth-place. South Dakota State rounds out the top-five as they finished the day at 594 (+18).

"We have a very competitive team and we are excited to get back out there tomorrow and defend our title," said Jensen.

The Cowboys will continue play at the Battle in the Tetons on Tuesday morning, with one 18 hole round.
