Sept. 8, 2003
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowboy golf team teed off its 2003 fall season on Monday, shooting two identical rounds of 304 to complete the first 36 holes at 40-over par 608. Wyoming finds itself in 10th place in the 14-team field.
UW sophomore Eric Baily from Crofton, Neb., led the way for the Pokes with a four-over par total of 146 through the first two rounds to place 11th.
The tournament is being hosted by the University of Nebraska at the Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb. The final 18-hole round is scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m., Mountain time (8:30 a.m., Central time) on Tuesday with a shotgun start.
Iowa State leads in the team competition. The Cyclones hold a six-stroke lead over Illinois State and Akron entering Tuesday's final round.
There is a tie for the individual lead. Blake Sattler of Akron and Tyrone Van Aswegen of Oklahoma City University both fired one-under par totals of 141 -- five strokes better than Wyoming's Baily.
"Eric (Baily) shot an even par round of 71 in the morning round," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "He came back with a solid round of 75 in the afternoon, and is right in the hunt for a Top 10 finish. Eric had some of his family at the tournament today, and I'm really excited for him.
"The rest of the team played a little inconsistently today, but I saw some good things for the first tournament of the season."
The Firethorn Golf Club measures 6,762 yards and plays to a par of 71.
