Sept. 16, 2002
LARAMIE< Wyo. -
Wyoming senior Kurt Kowaluk posted his second Top 10 finish of last week as he shot an even-par total of 216 for three rounds to place ninth at the University of New Mexico William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Kowaluk finished just nine strokes back of individual champion Michael Letzig of New Mexico. Letzig shot a nine-under par total of 207 to capture medalist honors. Ryan Moore of UNLV finished in second at 210.
As a team, the Cowboys finished 18th in the field of 18 teams with a final score of 915, 51-over par. New Mexico captured the team title with an even-par score of 864 for the three-round tournament. They outdistanced UNLV, who finished five strokes back at 869.
Kowaluk tied for fifth at the University of Nebraska Fairway Club Invitational on Tuesday, Sept. 10 for his first Top 10 finish of the week. Kowaluk fired a three-over par total of 216 at Nebraska.
"Kurt (Kowaluk) had an outstanding week," said UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen. "He shot three rounds of par or lower in the six rounds he played this week, and his highest round was a three-over par round in the second 18 holes at New Mexico. That is consistent play.
"The remainder of our young guys didn't fare so well in Albuquerque, but it was great experience for them. The Tucker Tournament is one of the top tournaments in the country, so the young guys on our team had an opportunity to play with some of the elite players in college golf. I think they saw what it takes to be successful at the college level by watching some of those outstanding individuals play.
"We get right back after it this coming weekend at the Air Force Falcon (Invitational). This gives us a chance to play a lot of competitive rounds in a short period of time. I think that is good for our young players to help sharpen their games in this fall season."
The Tucker Intercollegiate was played on The Championship Course on the University of New Mexico campus. The course measured 7,272 yards and played to a par of 72.
Wyoming's next tournament will be on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 20-22 at the Falcon Invitational hosted by the Air Force Academy.
