Sept. 20, 2009
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
In their second tournament of the 2009 fall season, the Cowboy golf team tied for fourth place out of 19 teams on Sunday at the Air Force Falcon Invitational. Individually, three different Cowboys placed in the top-20 of the 108-man field.
The Air Force Falcon Invitational was held at the Eisenhower Golf Club in Colorado Springs, Colo. The tournament was played on the Blue Course, which measures 7,301 yards and plays to a par of 72.
Junior Zach Zaremba led the Cowboys over the weekend and earned his third career top-10 tournament finish. Zaremba, who was tied for third place entering Sunday's final round, shot a 76 (+4) on Sunday to finish in a ninth place tie. Over the three-round tournament, Zaremba was two-under par at 214.
Fellow juniors Gabe Maier and Phil Henzlik each had a solid round on Sunday to finish in the top-20. The pair tied for 17th place with a three-round total of 216 (E). After shooting a career best 68 (-5) during Saturday's second round, Henzlik matched that career best on Sunday. Maier finished the tournament with a third round 71 (-1). This marks the sixth career top-20 for Maier and the third for Henzlik.
"We are slowly making progress and a fourth place tie is a nice finish," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "We closed the gap with UNLV, who won the Tucker Invite last week, and were only five shots off of them and the top-three. However, I would have liked to see us finish a little stronger. On the final hole, we had two three puts and one double-bogey.
"Overall, I feel good about where we are as a team. We have good team chemistry and are doing a lot of exciting things. We need to keep working hard and get a little better in each of our final three fall tournaments."
Colorado State won their second consecutive Falcon Invitational with a three-round total of 855 (-9). Northern Colorado's Steve Bidne took individual medalist honors wth a three-round total of 206 (-10).
The next fall tournament for the Cowboy golf team is the Oregon State Invitational, which will be played Sept. 28-29 in Corvallis, Ore.
