Jan. 2, 2014
MARICOPA, Ariz. - Three University of Wyoming men's golfers are set to participate in the inaugural Saguaro Amateur this weekend at Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. Senior Brent Baylon, redshirt junior P.J. Thomas and freshman Arron Lickteig will play as unattached amateurs in this year's field.
The 54-hole event played at the home of the Cowgirl Classic in April will feature 108 amateur golfers from 46 universities throughout the United States. The tournament was founded by Wyoming head coach Joe Jensen and Colorado head coach Roy Edwards.
"We wanted to create a tournament during the winter months," Jensen said. "It is a great way to get out and play and it has drawn a lot of interest throughout the country and it should be an exciting three days."
Southern Dunes will play at 7,150 yards for the event, which will feature a stroke play format.
The Saguaro Amateur will be an event used to compute many of the various world amateur golf rankings. Tournament information is available at SaguaroAmateur.com.
