Wyoming Men's Golf to Host Sixth Annual Cowboy Classic, Presented by Cleveland Golf
April 6, 2008
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -
The University of Wyoming men's golf team will host the sixth annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland Golf on Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8. The tournament will take place at the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament will play 54 holes, 36 on the first day and 18 on day two.
"This is a good field, playing at a premium property and I'm excited to host this year's Cowboy Classic," said Wyoming Director of Golf Joe Jensen. "It's fun to be able to host a home event. I think that the teams enjoy coming to Talking Stick and the kids enjoy playing here.
"This event has grown rapidly and there is a great amount of national interest. We are very appreciative of our partnerships with Troon Golf, Talking Stick, Cleveland Golf, Resort Suites, Marriott, Crocs and Adidas. Without them and the support of our administration at UW, this tournament could not happen."
The Cowboys' highest finish at their own tournament came in 2005 when they finished in second place at seven over par. In its brief six year history, the Wyoming Cowboy Classic field has grown from 11 to a high of 23 teams last year. This year's field includes 2007 team champion UC Davis, Pac-10 power Oregon State and the two 2007 event runner-up teams, Utah and UC Santa Barbara.
The 2008 Cowboys are a young team, at times playing five freshmen in their lineup this season.
Notable individuals that will be expected to compete for top medalist honors are Boise State senior Troy Merritt, who is ranked 15th by Golfstat, and 17th ranked senior James Allenby from Oregon State.
For the sixth consecutive year The Cowboy Classic will be played at the North Course at Talking Stick (www.talkingstickgolfclub.com). It is located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community at 9989 East Indian Bend Road in Scottsdale.
Talking Stick was designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 1998. Since its opening, it has hosted the PGA Tour Qualifying School in 1998 and `99, and the USGA Sectional Qualifier in 1998, 2002 and 2005, among numerous other events.
