LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Niel King, of Gillette, Wyo., has signed a national letter of intent to play golf at the University of Wyoming. UW men's golf coach Joe Jensen announced King's signing on Tuesday.

King is a three-time All-State golfer at Campbell County High School in Gillette, Wyo. He is the defending Wyoming Class 4A individual champion. His high school team placed second in state as a team his senior season. King has also won three Wyoming State Junior Amateur titles, including the 2001 Wyoming State Junior title.

An accomplished basketball player, he earned 4A All-State honors his senior season, while helping lead Campbell County to the 4A State Championship. He was also selected to represent Wyoming in the Montana-Wyoming and South Dakota-Wyoming basketball all-star games at the conclusion of his senior season.

"Niel (King) is an outstanding player who has a very bright future in college golf," said first-year Wyoming head coach Jensen. "He is a great athlete who posses an intense work ethic on the golf course and in the classroom. Having a quality student/athlete like Niel join our program gives us an outstanding competitor and should improve our ability to compete at a high level."

King is 6-3 and 175 pounds. In addition to sports, he has been a member of the National Honor Society for the past three years, and was named the Outstanding Junior Student by the faculty and staff of Campbell County High School. He is a two-time Presidential Academic Awards Program recipient, and has been on the Dean's List every semester of high school.

King also competes in a number of American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events. His best finish in an AJGA event was a seventh-place showing at the St. Regis Aspen Junior Classic in June of 2001. He served as a team captain of his high school team for three years, and he medalled in every high school tournament he played from his sophomore through senior seasons.

Born June 29, 1983, he is the son of Lori and Kevin King of Gillette.

King will join the Cowboy golf team in the fall of 2002.
