LARAMIE, Wyo. -

It had been since 2002 that a Wyoming Cowboy golfer qualified for an NCAA Regional Tournament, but Gabe Maier changed that on Monday. Maier earned an individual bid to the regional being played in Bremerton, Wash. from May 20-22.

Maier, a junior from Cody, Wyo., is just the fifth Cowboy to qualify for a regional event as an individual. Maier joins Dave McCleave (1990), Pat Fry (1995), David Hearn (1999, 2000, 2001) and Mike Urbatchka (2002). The 1992 Cowboy team, consisting of Don Abbott, Andrew Hoff, Jason Justensen, McCleave and Trevor Monroe, also qualified for regionals. Scott Walter is the only Cowboy to make it to the NCAA Tournament, doing so in 1977 when there was not a regional event.

Maier currently holds the fourth-best stroke average in the Mountain West Conference, a 71.70. He placed in the top-10 of an event four times this season and finished in the top-five three times. His season was highlighted by winning the 92-man UW Desert Intercollegiate last fall. He is currently ranked No. 81 in the national GolfStat Cup Rankings and is ranked as having the 14th best total short game in the nation in GolfStat's statistical rankings.

"We are all very excited for Gabe, as he is very deserving of this opportunity," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "Gabe has played really well this season and it is great to have him recognized on a national level. He earned this opportunity with his tremendous work ethic. We will prepare hard for this event and go out there to compete for a chance of going to nationals."

The regional in which Maier will play will be held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. That regional will be hosted by the University of Washington. There are six regional events across the country that will serve as qualifying events for the National Championship.
