Cowboy Golfer Gabe Maier Will Begin Play at NCAA Regionals on Thursday Morning
May 19, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming golfer Gabe Maier has earned a tremendous opportunity and will compete in one of six NCAA regional tournaments this Thursday-Saturday. Maier will travel to Bremerton, Wash. to compete in the Gold Mountain Regional.
There are six regional events across the country that will serve as qualifiers for the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf Championship that will be played June 1-6 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The top five teams and low individual at each regional site will advance to the national championship.
The Gold Mountain Regional will be played at the 7,104 yard and par 72 Gold Mountain Golf Club. The tournament, which is hosted by Washington, will feature 75 college golfers including the teams of Washington, USC, Illinois, Oregon State, San Diego, Colorado State, Middle Tennessee, SMU, New Mexico, Fresno State, Eastern Michigan, VCU and Loyola (Maryland). A total of 10 individuals, including Maier, will also be competing.
"This is a fantastic event and we are thrilled to be here," UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. "Gabe has seen many of these teams and players before and he has beaten or competed with all of them. If Gabe comes out and plays well, he is capable of a nice showing in this event. He has had a good week of training since the Mountain West Championship and is in position to play well. We are going to go out there with a good game plan and hope for the best.
"Gabe really likes this course. He is very accurate, especially with his short irons, and that style of play fits nicely with the course layout here."
Maier, a native of Cody, Wyo., earned his spot in regionals by completing a very successful junior season. He is currently carrying a stroke average of 71.70, which is the fourth best in the MWC. He has finished in the top-10 of an event four times this season and has been in the top-five three times. His season was highlighted by winning the 92-man UW Desert Intercollegiate this past fall in Palm Desert, Calif. He currently ranks No. 81 in the GolfStat Cup rankings and is ranked No. 14 nationally in total short game by GolfStat.
Maier is in elite company in terms of NCAA participants from Wyoming. He is only the fifth Cowboy to qualify for NCAA Regionals as an individual and the first to do so since 2002. He joins Dave McCleave (1990), Pat Fry (1995), David Hearn (1999, 2000 and 2001) and Mike Urbatchka (2002). In addition, the 1992 Cowboy team qualified for regionals. Scott Walter is the only Cowboy to ever compete in the NCAA Championship, doing so in 1977.
The ever-tough MWC is sending a league record six teams to regional sites across the country. In addition to CSU and New Mexico, who will be in Bremerton with Maier, UNLV, TCU, San Diego State and BYU will all compete in regionals. Air Force's Tom Whitney joins Maier as the two individuals selected from the MWC.
The regional field will play a total of 54 holes, a round of 18 each day. Each day will begin with tee-times at 9 a.m. (Mountain Time). Maier will tee off on Thursday morning at 10:50 a.m. (MT).
