LARAMIE, Wyo. -

Niel King and Dan Silva, both juniors on the University of Wyoming men's golf team, had their dreams of qualifying for the 2004 U.S. Open Golf Championship come to an end on Monday, June 7 in the Sectional Qualifier in Littleton, Colo.

King and Silva, competing in a field of 33 golfers at the Columbine Country Club in Littleton, fell short of qualifying for the U.S. Open in the sectional competition. Silva shot rounds of 75 and 76 for a seven-over par total of 151. King concluded the competition with a 14-over par total of 158, after rounds of 80 and 78.

John Douma of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Steve Gotsche of Great Bend, Kan., captured the two qualifying spots at stake at the Littleton sectional. Douma fired rounds of 67 and 69 for an eight-under par score of 136. Gotsche finished one stroke back at seven-under 137. He shot rounds of 67 and 70.

The Littleton Sectional Qualifier was one of 13 across the nation. Eight of the 13 sectionals were held on Monday, June 7. The other five sectionals were contested on Tuesday, June 8. For the first time in the history of U.S. Open a sectional qualifying event was held in the state of Hawaii this year.

The qualifiers from each of the 13 sectional qualifying events advance to the 2004 U.S. Open Championship, which will be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., on June 17-20.

King and Silva each advanced to the Littleton Sectional Qualifier after winning their respective U.S. Open local qualifying events. King won the U.S. Open Local Qualifier in Riverton, Wyo., on May 24. Silva tied for top honors at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier in Fort Collins, Colo., on May 17.

King, a native of Gillette, Wyo., fired a 73 at the Riverton Country Club to outdistance his closest competitor, which was former Cowboy golfer Mike Urbatchka of Sheridan, Wyo. Urbatchka shot a 75.

Silva was one of five individuals to qualify from the Fort Collins Local Qualifier. Silva shot a 67 at Collindale Golf Club in Fort Collins on May 17. He tied James Love of Canada for top honors. Three other individuals fired rounds of 69 at Fort Collins to also qualify for the sectional qualifying round.
