He led the team with 11 pins and went 9-2 versus conference opponents. The winner of 28 matches, McCulley was 9-5 in dual action. He defeated four ranked opponents and was first in the Cowboy and Nebraska-Kearney Opens. He finished second in the Reno Tournament of Champions and was third in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. His performances didn't go unnoticed. He entered the national rankings and stayed for the whole season. His 28 wins were third among UW wrestlers, and he scored 39 dual points for the Pokes. He qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career, going 2-1 at the West Regional for third place and earning an at-large bid. McCulley finished his season with a 0-2 mark at NCAAs. He was given the Joe Dowler Cowboy Up Award by the UW coaching staff after the season for his toughness and resolve. 2011-12: McCulley was a slow starter in his redshirt freshman season, but finished off the year on a 19-4 tear from Dec. 10 and on. He placed in three tournaments, taking third in the UNK Loper Open and winning the Utah Valley and Rocky Mountain Opens. He then became a fixture for the Pokes at 157 pounds in duals. He entered the varsity lineup on Jan. 20 and didn't look back, going 6-2 through the dual season. He was sixth on the team with 28 wins and third with 10 pins. He had the team's third-fastest fall that season, pinning Charlie McMartin of Northern Colorado in 29 seconds in the Feb. 8 dual. He wrestled one of his best matches of the season versus Oklahoma State's Albert White, ranked 11th. McCulley held a late lead, but White nipped him in overtime in a 6-4 decision. McCulley had a bit of a disappointing end to his season when he went 2-2 to finish fourth at the West Regional, just one place out of an automatic NCAA bid. He received the Academic Hustle award from the coaching staff for his hard work in the classroom. 2010-11: McCulley took a redshirt during his first season with the UW program, as he wrestled in five open tournaments at 157 pounds. He posted a 23-5 overall record, including 4-4 against the WWC, with eight pins and three major decisions. He started 2010-11 with a title at the Northwest Open, but just missed placing at the Cowboy Open. He rebounded to claim third in his last three tournaments of the season. He notched a combined 16-3 mark to finish third at the UNK Loper Open, Utah Valley Open and Rocky Mountain Open. High School: At Rock Springs High, McCulley was the Wyoming 4A state champion in 2008 at 130 pounds as a sophomore and then again in 2010 as a senior at 152 pounds. As a junior in 2009, he was injured at the state tournament competing at 145 pounds. McCulley was a three-time 4A West Regional Champion. In 2008 he was the Wyoming USA Wrestling Triple Crown winner, as well as a Cadet All-American by placing fourth at USA Wrestling Nationals. He was on the honor roll each year at Rock Springs High. His grandfather, father and two uncles all wrestled at the collegiate level. He is an elementary education major at UW. Career record: 56-21 (21 falls) (One-time NCAA qualifier) |
