Wyoming Finishes First Day of Action At Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. - The University of Wyoming wrestling program had an up-and-down day Friday in the 31st annual Virginia Duals, going 1-1 on the opening day of the event.
The 'Pokes started off the day with a win over Bucknell, taking down the Bison by a narrow margin, 19-16. Wyoming won five matches, including one by pin and one by major decision. Among the highlights for the Cowboys were decisions from Chase Smith (141 pounds), Shane Onufer (165) and Dallas Hintz (174). In the 184-pound match, UW's Joe LeBlanc pinned Joe McMullan at the 1:01 mark for valuable team points and Joe O'Farrell took a 12-2 major decision over Bucknell's Conor Sweeney.
The win meant the Cowboys had to wrestle the Lehigh Mountain Hawks on Friday afternoon. Lehigh, ranked as high as eighth in the nation in some polls, set the tone early and defeated Wyoming 25-9. The Cowboys won three matches versus the Mountain Hawks, all by decision. Michael Martinez beat Mitch Berger in an 8-2 decision at 125 pounds, while Dallaserra and Onufer each won their matches.
Wyoming now will face Old Dominion at 8 a.m. Saturday in the consolation bracket.

125 pounds: Martinez defeated Mitch Berger in an 8-2 decision.
133: Jake Eitzen lost to Frank Cagnina in a 15-5 major decision.
141: Smith lost to Stephen Dutton in a 4-0 decision.
149: No. 20 Dallaserra defeated Kyle Rosser in a 9-6 decision.
157: Belleville lost to Brian Tanen in a 9-4 decision.
165: No. 6 Shane Onufer defeated No. 18 Brandon Hatchett in a 5-3 decision.
174: Patrick Martinez lost to No. 12 Austin Meys in an 8-2 decision.
184: No. 2 LeBlanc lost to No. 6 Robert Hamlin in a 7-6 decision.
197: Helbig lost to No. 14 Joe Kennedy in a 5-1 decision.
Heavyweight: Jack Tennant lost to No. 1 Zach Rey with a pin at 3:49.
