HAMPTON, Va. -

Drexel and Virginia Tech Dual Results
Results from the Citadel Dual will be posted as soon as available.

The University of Wyoming wrestlers had not traveled to compete in the Virginia Duals since the 2003-04 season, but knew going in how tough the competition would be. On Friday, the Cowboys went 1-2 falling to Drexel University and Virginia Tech, but defeating the Citadel in Hampton, Va.

Cory VomBaur (133), Garrett Desmond (141) and Carter Downing (149) collected the only three victories for the Cowboys against Drexel, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) powerhouse, and lost 28-9. VomBaur defeated William Martin 4-3, Desmond defeated Chris Renninger 4-2 and Downing defeated Marl Cartella 9-4.

"Drexel is one of those little, unknown schools that has a great pool of talent and competes at the national level every year," Wyoming head coach Steven Suder said. "Pennslyvania is one of the top three states in the country as far as talent goes. They have seven NCAA Qualifiers on their team and that made it a tough draw for us to start the tournament."

Wyoming faced Virginia Tech in the second round of competition, but fell short losing 20-17. Nick Ramirez (125), Vombaur, Desmond, Bryan Bernal (174) and Jason Still (Hwt.) all collected victories for the Cowboys, but one technical fall proved to be the deciding factor in the dual. Ramirez received a victory by forfeit. Vombaur won his second match of the day defeating Matt Rosen 4-3. Desmond also collected his second victory of the day defeating Andre Johnson 5-3. Bernal earned his first victory of the day defeating Steve Ratley 4-2 and Still notched a victory defeating Jim Powers 3-0.

"Virginia Tech had a good squad," Suder continued. "We tried to get to them, but just fell short of earning the victory."

The Virginia Duals offer teams that lose their first two matches a chance to compete in one more dual. Wyoming defeated The Citadel to finish the day 1-2. Wyoming collected seven victories against The Citadel including three by major decision. Cowboys collecting victories were Ramirez, Vombaur, Desmond, Downing (TF), Kyle Morrow (TF), Bernal (TF) and Preston Pavich.

"I was proud of some of our guys today," Suder added. "Some guys showed me some really good things and we can build off of those things and get ready for Boise State."

The Cowboys will host the Boise State Broncos on Friday, January 19 in the UniWyo Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
