Wyoming Wrestling Falls To Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The University of Wyoming wrestling program lost a close dual to the Cal Poly Mustangs on Friday night in an event that came down to the last match.
Wyoming took a 16-15 lead after Joe LeBlanc's 14-4 major decision over Kelan Bragg, so the final match between Cal Poly's Ryan Smith and Wyoming's L.J. Helbig at the 197-pound level was the deciding factor. Helbig dropped a 10-8 decision to Smith, and the Mustangs escaped with an 18-16 win.
Cal Poly got major decisions from Atticus Disney (285 pounds), Boris Novachkov at 141 and Barrett Abel at 157 as the Mustangs built a 12-9 lead in the first six bouts.
However, Wyoming (4-4 overall, 0-0 WWC) came away from the dual with some quality wins by several wrestlers.
In the 125-pound match, UW's Michael Martinez beat Brandan Rocha in a 7-3 decision, and 133-pounder Tyler Cox, who is ranked 20th at 125 pounds, followed that up with a 6-5 decision over No. 10 Filip Novachkov.
After a loss in the 141-pound matchup, Wyoming rebounded as No. 20 Cole Dallaserra took a 5-1 decision over Stephen Thalin in the 149-pound match. Sixth-ranked Shane Onufer used a late takedown to defeat No. 18 Ryan DesRoches for the second time this season in a 5-4 decision in the 165-pound match. Onufer now is 18-0 this season.
Cal Poly won two of the final three bouts to earn the team victory, improving to 5-0 in dual meets this season. Cal Poly is 4-0 in its all-time series against the Cowboys.
