Broncos Defeat Cowboys 26-12
Jan. 19, 2007
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Redshirt freshmen Nick Ramirez and redshirt sophomore Garrett Desmond gave the University of Wyoming Cowboy wrestlers their only two victories of the night as the Boise State Broncos defeated the Cowboys 26-12 Friday night at the UniWyo Sports Complex. The Cowboys fall to 1-6 and the Broncos improve to 5-2.
"Their guys are tough," UW head coach Steven Suder said. "They have a tough team and they proved that tonight."
Ramirez had the most exciting match of the night as he defeated Cory Fish 7-5 in sudden death overtime. Ramirez scored an escape point and a riding time point in the last minute of the third period to force the match into overtime. Ramirez executed a takedown at the 7:42 mark in sudden death to earn the sudden victory 7-5.
"It was a tough match," Ramirez said. " I just knew I had to stay focused and think about winning. It's overtime and you just got to get it done."
Desmond recorded the second victory for the Cowboys as he defeated Jeff Newby by decision 3-2. Desmond earned a takedown at the 6:39 mark that proved to be the deciding factor in the match.
"I am disappointed with the way we wrestled tonight," Suder continued. "A seven minute wrestling match is broken down into 28, 15 second battles. There have to be tough decisions made every 15 seconds that decide the outcome of a match. We are not making the right decisions as a team."
The Cowboys return to action tomorrow, January 20th as they host the #19 Oregon State Beavers at 2 p.m. and the University of Northern Iowa Panthers at 7 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
"We have a chance to redeem ourselves and win some of those crucial 15 second battles tomorrow. I look forward to competing against those two teams tomorrow," Suder said.
