UW Wrestlers End Regular Season At Air Force

Laramie, Wyo. -- In their final dual of the season, the University of Wyoming wrestling team came up short to the Air Force Falcons Wednesday night in Colorado Springs. The Falcons won six of 10 matches against Wyoming taking the dual 19-14. The Pokes close out the season with an 10-7 dual record.
Wyoming got on the board early in the contest as 197 pound junior Kevin Kessner, ranked 19th, defeated Ryan Kaiser. Kessner took care Kaiser 18-3 for his third technical fall of the year. The Falcons answered back as Kevin Hoy, ranked 3rd, defeated senior Brad Steele 9-0 in the heavyweight match. At 125 pounds, Wyoming freshman Bryce Leonhardt was defeated by Heath McKim 6-3, giving Air Force a 7-5 lead.
Air Force added to their lead when Matthew Benza defeated freshman Tyson Shatto 5-1 in the 133 pound match, followed by another Falcon victory at 141 pounds by Chirstopher Bennett over Blake Gunter 9-2.
Cowboy freshman Patrick Shuler won the second UW match of the evening with a 2-1 decision over Josh Peterson in the 149 pound match. Junior Andrew Shuler followed his brother's lead by winning his 157 pound match with a 4-1 victory over Justin Gabbard, and making the score 13-11 in favor of the Falcons.
Air Force would pick up another match win in the 165 pound match as Blaine Brown defeated junior Trevor Murray 11-5. The Pokes answered in the next match as 174 pound junior Levi Prevost, ranked 12th, won by a 6-2 decision over Jacob Lillich, pulling UW within two points of the Falcons 16-14. In the final match of the night, Luke Lefever held on to defeat Cowboy freshman Sam Wendland 2-0 at 184 pounds, for Air Force's 19-14 victory.
The Cowboys will next compete at the West Regional on March 8 in
Charleston, Ill. The tournament will match Wyoming wrestlers against
competitors from Eastern Illinois, Northern Iowa, Fresno State and Air Force
in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships March 20-22.
