LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Cowboy wrestling team polished up their game in the annual intrasquad dual on Friday night at War Memorial Fieldhouse.
The dual started with junior Tyson Shatto (133 pounds) facing off against freshman Garrett Desmond (141 pounds). This match would go the distance with Shatto defeating Desmond in a 9-4 decision.
The second match of the night matched up freshman newcomer Preston Pavich and returning West Regional Champion Sam Wendland at 184 pounds. Wendland defeated Pavich by pin in the second period at 4:09.
In the next match the Cowboys would welcome back junior Bryce Leonhardt, who's season was shortened last year due to injury while enjoying a 14-match win streak. Leonhardt went against redshirt freshman Dustin Rock in a 125 pound bout. Rock would go the distance with Leonhardt, but fell short in a 9-3 decision.
Returning letterman Patrick Shuler faced redshirt freshman Kyle Dye for the 149 pound spot heading into the season. Shuler secured his starting position by defeating Dye in a 7-4 decision.
Next at 165 pounds, freshman Dan Barrone challenged sophomore Gary Dack for the starting nod, however, Dack defeated Barrone by a decision of 11-5.
The sixth match of the night would bring back Garrett Desmond to the mat to face redshirt freshmen Carter Downing for the starting spot at 141 pounds heading into the season. Downing left no doubt by defeating Desmond by technical fall 18-2.
The final match of the night would be a clash between junior Malcolm Havens and freshman Preston Pavich. Havens, who is the starter at 197 pounds, pinned the freshman just before the end of the first period at 2:59.
The night consisted of only seven bouts because of the younger portion of the team is traveling to Powell, Wyo. for the Northwest Open.
"It's nice to give our guys a taste of that match atmosphere, especially for the young guys," said UW head coach Steven Suder.
"Overall, I thought all the matches went well and it was nice to see everyone competing hard. Our guys are definitely excited to finally face on opponent with different colored jersey next week."
The Cowboys will face that different colored jersey next week when they host the University of Oregon Ducks at 7:30 in the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium.
