LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming wrestling team completed their opening weekend with the 32nd Cowboy Open on Sunday at the War Memorial Fieldhouse. Over 15 collegiate programs particpated, adding up to 406 total wrestlers. This was the most wrestlers ever to compete in Cowboy Open history.

Four Cowboys wrestled their way into the finals of their respective weight classes. In Division I action, Sam Wendland took home his first Cowboy Open title at 184 pounds winning three matches on Sunday. Wendland recorded one pin and beat Montana State-Northern's Jesse Juarez in an 8-7 decision in the final.

Gary Dack fought his way into the 165 pound final with three wins, two of them by pin. In the final, Dack had control of the match, but lost in the third period by pin to Joey Bracomonte of Oregon. Another Cowboy who earned a trip to the final was Carter Downing at 141 pounds. Downing ended the day going 2-1 with his only loss in the final to Kourtney Lake of Adams State in a 6-4 decision. Redshirt freshman Dan Clum finished off a strong opening weekend by posting a 6-1 record and a third place finish at 157 pounds. Clum beat out Jared Webster of Chadron State 4-1 to claim third place.

"Overall I thought we wrestled pretty well," said UW wrestling coach Steven Suder. "To place at this tournament you have to compete very hard.

"We had our times of brilliance and times where something was missing, but in those occasions we were able to come back and compete.

"Sam Wendland had a great day today and I was very happy with Dan Clum and Gary Dack, as well. I thought Gary out-wrestled his opponent in the finals, but sometimes those things just happen."

The Cowboys will be back in tournament action next weekend when they travel to Omaha, Neb. on November, 20 for the Nebraska-Omaha Open.
