Cox Stays Unbeaten, But Pokes Fall To Gophers
Nov. 24, 2013
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -
Junior Tyler Cox dominated in the opening bout of the dual, but the University of Wyoming wrestling team lost to No. 2 Minnesota on Sunday, 41-5.
The Cowboys (1-1 overall) looked to be in good shape after Cox gave UW a 5-0 lead after an 18-2 technical fall to begin the dual. But the Pokes would drop every match after that to suffer their worst defeat since Jan. 18, 2008, in a 40-0 loss to Northern Iowa.
Cox gave up the first takedown, but outscored Sam Brancale 18-0 the rest of the way for his 70th career win. He leads the squad in career wins and now is the only unbeaten wrestler on the roster.
But the UW wrestlers struggled in the subsequent matches, as redshirt freshmen Cole Mendenhall (141) and Brent Havlik (174) and junior Shane Woods (197) lost their first matches of the season. In the only matchup of ranked wrestlers, UW's 14th-ranked Andy McCulley lost to third-ranked Dylan Ness.
Up next, the Pokes will head to Nevada for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6-7.
