LARAMIE, Wyo. -
University of Wyoming junior wrestler Carter Downing received third place honors at the prestigious Brute Reno Tournament of Champions Wednesday in Reno, Nevada. Wyoming finished 15th as a team of the 29 institutions that participated.
"This is a great caliber of tournament and there are a bunch of good teams here," head coach Steven Suder said. "When you look at teams like Oklahoma State, Oregon State and Central Michigan, you realize how tough this tournament is."
Downing finished in third place in the 149 pound division going 6-1 with three pins and two technical falls. He won his first four matches before losing in the fifth round. Downing then won his next two matches to take third place honors including pinning Levi Duyn to place. Downing is now 19-6 on the year and leads the team in pins (3), technical falls (5) and major decisions (5).
"Carter did well on Wednesday," Suder continued. "He is definitely in the running and in the mix with some pretty good guys around the country."
"Both VomBaur and Ramirez wrestled tough, but they are young and still learning," Suder added. "They are showing us some good things."
The Brute Reno Tournament of Champions fielded 29 teams, including four of which are in the USA Today/Intermat/NCWA Division I Wrestling Top 25.
"We have faced some pretty tough competition over the last two weeks," Suder continued. "But we still have to find ways to win matches."
The Wyoming Cowboy Wrestling team will now enjoy a three week break before resuming action January 12-13 in Hampton, Virginia for the Virginia Duals which will run all day on both dates.
