After more than two months of competing away from home, the 15th-ranked University of Wyoming wrestling team will return to the UniWyo Sports Complex on Sunday to face No. 13 Oregon State.
Matches begin at 2 p.m. between teams featured in the top 15 of the dual-based NWCA/USA Today/AWN poll. The Cowboys occupy the 15th spot and the Beavers are slated 13th in the nation.
Oregon State features six wrestlers in the top 20 of their respective weight classes. Those in the Amateur Wrestling News poll include Michael Mangrum, fourth at 141 pounds; Scott Sakaguchi, ninth at 149; R.J. Pena, seventh at 157; Ty Vinson, 18th at 184; Taylor Meeks, ninth at 197; and Chad Hanke, ranked fifth at heavyweight.
Wyoming has two wrestlers in the weekly rankings with sophomore Andy McCulley sitting in 12th at 157 and senior Alfonso Hernandez rated fourth at 197 pounds.
The teams have matched up 25 times since 1960, and Wyoming has won seven of those duals. In the most recent meeting on Jan. 15, 2012, Wyoming brought home with a narrow 23-22 victory in Corvallis, Ore., in a dual that came down to tiebreaking criteria after the squads tied at 22 after 10 matches.
A look at the Cowboys
The Pokes are 6-2 in dual action and lead the Western Wrestling Conference standings at 1-0. The Cowboys have beaten the likes of Boise State, Oklahoma, Utah Valley, San Francisco State, CSU Bakersfield and Cal Poly. UW has dropped duals versus Nebraska and Oklahoma State.
Sunday marks the first time the Cowboys have competed in Laramie since Nov. 11, 2012.
A look at the Beavers
Oregon State is 2-3 overall, and 1-1 in Pac-12 action. The Beavers boast wins over Boise State and North Dakota State, with losses versus Boise State, Michigan and Minnesota. Thus far, OSU has earned a 1-1 mark on the road, and will take on Air Force on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
