LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Fans showed their support in a big way this season for the University of Wyoming wrestling team when an organization announced UW finished in the top 20 nationwide in dual attendance.
Figures released Monday by Roby Publishing & LU Wrestling News put the Pokes at No. 16 in the nation in average dual attendance with 993 fans per contest. A total of 4,967 people came to five duals throughout the season. Iowa led the country in attendance, averaging nearly 9,000 fans per dual.
"It shows how important wrestling is to the state of Wyoming and to our fan base, so it's something to build on," Wyoming head coach Mark Branch said. "I definitely want to average 1,000 next year. It's a team effort, from our marketing department and our coaching staff and our kids going out and wrestling an exciting style."
The Cowboys had more than 700 fans at each home event this year and broke the 1,000-fan plateau twice. The dual against Oklahoma State drew a season-high 1,549 fans, while Oklahoma and Wyoming wrestled in front of 1,098 fans. Both duals took place in the Arena-Auditorium, while the remaining three were in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
The season figures represent a 34 percent increase over last season's attendance average of 739.
