LOS ANGELES - Two competitors associated with the University of Wyoming wrestling program will be part of an event this weekend featuring the U.S. team battling world wrestling power Iran.

University of Wyoming assistant wrestling coach Chris Pendleton and volunteer assistant wrestling coach Clayton Foster each will be part of Team USA in the "United 4 Wrestling" event Sunday in Los Angeles. The friendly international wrestling dual competition between the U.S. team and Iran at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena begins at 3 p.m. MT. The goal of the event is to sustain momentum for the "Keep Olympic Wrestling" movement and the "2020 Vision: Wrestling, Keep the Dream Alive" campaign. In February 2013, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board made a recommendation that wrestling be eliminated from the slate of core sports at the 2020 Olympic Games. A final decision on the program of the 2020 Olympics will be made by the entire IOC in September. The action spurred a worldwide effort spearheaded by FILA and the 177 nations which participate in wrestling to retain wrestling as an Olympic sport.

The dual meet will feature current international freestyle wrestling rules. The event will be a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, declared by the international wrestling federation, FILA.

Pendleton faces Hamed Tatari at 96 kilograms (211.5 pounds). A two-time national champion at Oklahoma State, Pendleton has wrestled in various freestyle events over the past years, while Tatari was fifth at the 2013 World Cup.

Foster was an NCAA finalist at Oklahoma State. He is the wrestler in the 84-kilogram (185 pound) spot, and will battle Ehsan Lashgari, a 2012 Olympic bronze medalist and three-time Asian Championships title winner.

In recent action, both Pendleton and Foster claimed runner-up honors in the U.S. Open senior freestyle event on April 20 in Las Vegas. Their performances earned them berths to the U.S. World Team Trials in June, which serves as a qualifier for the World Championships. The World Team Trials are similar to the Olympic Trials in a non-Olympic year.
