Seven Cowboy Wrestlers Named To Conference Academic Teams

Hitting the books proved to be beneficial for seven University of Wyoming wrestlers after it was announced Tuesday that they had earned conference academic honors.
The Western Wrestling Conference unveiled its All-Academic team and Coaches' Honor Roll recipients which featured seven Cowboys, including redshirt freshman Tanner Harms, senior Alfonso Hernandez, senior Michael Poulos, sophomore Leland Pfeifer, junior Jake Eitzen and redshirt freshmen Cole Ford and Benjamin Stroh.
The All-Academic team is made up of 18 student-athletes who maintained a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade-point average, along with being a starter or key reserve and a sophomore or higher in academic standing. The Coaches' Honor Roll recognized 46 student-athletes who maintained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
In late May, the Cowboys were one of just 30 teams in the nation to be honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for team academics. The Pokes finished 25th in the nation in team GPA with a cumulative 3.034 mark.
The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
All-Academic Team honorees
Alfonso Hernandez - Hernandez was honored by the WWC five times in his career for academics. Hernandez also was named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team for the second time in his career in May. He graduated with a 3.64 GPA in kinesiology and health promotion and finished his Wyoming career eighth in career wins (120) and was a two-time All-American at 197 pounds.
Michael Poulos - Poulos was 5-12 at 174 pounds in 2013, appearing in two duals for the Cowboys. He earned league academic honors four times in his career, and he graduated with a 3.60 GPA in kinesiology and health promotion.
Leland Pfeifer - Pfeifer, who was on the Coaches' Honor Roll last season, went 3-11 at heavyweight in 2013, including a third-place finish at the NCAA West Regional. He owned a 3.57 GPA in geography.
Coaches' Honor Roll honorees
Cole Ford - Ford redshirted in 2013 as a freshman, and went 10-7 in open tournaments. He earned a 3.18 GPA in animal and veterinary sciences.
Benjamin Stroh - Stroh was 16-1 in open tournaments, redshirting his first season with the program. He tallied a 3.12 GPA, and has not declared a major.
