Nine Cowboys Place at UNC Old Chicago Open

While their teammates were busy battling Boise State in a dual competition Friday, several University of Wyoming wrestlers were taking part in the Northern Colorado Old Chicago Open on Saturday in Greeley, Colo.
Nine UW competitors placed in the top six of their respective brackets, including one champion, freshman Zach Beard. All UW true freshmen competed unattached in the competition.
Beard dominated the 165-pound bracket with five bonus-point wins for his second tournament title of the year. Beard leads UW with 16 wins, seven pins and five major decisions.
Freshman Eric Hoffman went 4-1 to finish second at 149, while redshirt freshman Jake Elliot was sixth at 149 with a 3-2 mark. Freshman Archie Colgan was second at 157 (4-1), while three placed at 174: freshman Kyle Pope was second (3-1), sophomore Jace Jensen was third (5-1) and freshman Luke Paine was fourth (4-2). Freshman Chaz Polson went 2-2 at 165 pounds.
Foster Keys Team USA Win Over Russia
Wrestling in association with the Wyoming Wrestling Regional Training Center, Foster was victorious in his match to seal the U.S. win. Foster beat Vladislav Gabaraev of Russia in a 9-1 technical fall at 84 kilograms (185 pounds). He was one of four U.S. competitors to win, helping secure a 4-3 victory for the U.S. Foster also was second in the U.S. Senior World Team Trials this summer, and first and third in two other international competitions in August.
Sunday's performance helped offset a 4-3 loss on Saturday to Russia in the two-dual series. Other U.S. winners included Kellen Russell at 66 kilograms (145.5 pounds), Kyle Dake at 74 kilograms (163 pounds) and Zach Rey at 120 kilograms (264.5 pounds).
