Dec. 23, 2013
OREM, Utah - University of Wyoming 184-pound redshirt freshman Benjamin Stroh (Harlem, Mont./Chinook HS) was named the Western Wrestling Conference Wrestler of the Week after an outstanding performance on the mat last week. The conference award was announced Monday by the league.
Stroh had a great weekend for the Cowboys, going a perfect 7-0 through one dual match and six tournament bouts. Against No. 24 Oregon State on Friday night, Stroh came away with a dominant 15-3 major decision over Brian Engdahl to give UW four team points. The victory marked Stroh's first career dual win for Wyoming.
On Sunday, Stroh rolled through the 184-pound bracket at the Reno Tournament of Champions with six wins, including four bonus-point victories. He won the tournament title thanks to wins over competitors from Arizona State, Boise State, North Carolina and Ohio. Stroh defeated 20th-ranked Alex Utley of UNC in the semifinals, 12-6, for his third win over a ranked opponent this season. He then upended Blake Stauffer of ASU in the final, 4-3, for his third tournament title on the year.
With the seven victories, the Cowboy redshirt freshman improved to 18-5 on the season. He also jumped all the way from unranked to 15th in Monday's Amateur Wrestling News poll.
The conference honor is Stroh's second of the season and second of his career.
The Western Wrestling Conference, which is in its eighth year of competition, is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley and Wyoming.
