LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming spirit program made history under first-year head coach Matthew Ortega earning a spot in the National Cheerleaders Association College Nationals for the first time in UW’s history. Wyoming earned the prestigious Gold Paid Bid Award to College Nationals at the NCA/USA Cheer and Dance Camp last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev., which gives UW an automatic invite to the College Nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla., on April 8-12, 2015. The event in April will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

“Our entire program is elated to make history being the first Wyoming Cheer Team to compete at Nationals,” Ortega said. “We have never received anything above a Bronze award, so it shows how hard our kids have worked.”

The camp featured 38 teams and more than 1,000 spirit team members competing for bronze, silver and gold bids, while learning the latest material in collegiate cheer. Wyoming was fourth in overall points in the entire camp and also earned the Most Spirited award voted on by all athletes, coaches and camp instructors. UW also earned six Superior Blue Ribbons that are awarded for consistently being above standard collegiate material throughout the camp. Wyoming added the coveted USA Superior Award at the conclusion of camp as well.

“We are beyond proud of our student-athletes,” Ortega said. “They represented our school, community and state with excellence and pride.”

Wyoming earned first-place honors in game day routine and the coed partner stunt competition in the 1A division. UW finished second in the rally routine, as well as the entire game day routine. Wyoming also walked away with the Most Collegiate Mascot Award given to the mascot that exemplifies a collegiate mascot’s presentation and professionalism.

The spirit program led by Ortega, assistant coaches Marie Lopez and Bree Dronen prepped for competition at the second-largest sprit camp in the country from mid-June through July.
