The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (11-2 overall) wrapped up their non-conference season with a 49-point win, 87-38 win against the South Dakota Mines Lady Hardrockers (9-5 overall) on Thursday night in Laramie.

"It was an interesting basketball game in the first ten minutes. We settled for perimeter shots when we had the size advantage in the post," said head coach Joe Legerski. "We talked about getting the ball inside and when we did that everyone started to relax and we went on several runs. Chaundra had another double-double which is becoming common place in just 23 minutes of action and shows that we got the ball down low. As the second half started, we shot the ball better and came out against the zone and hit our first three shots from beyond the arc. We got everyone several minutes on the court. Brenna Freeze and Marquelle Dent played well off the bench tonight, and just in general everyone gave us a lift. That's what we wanted from this game."

Chaundra Sewell led the way once again with another double-double. She recorded 20 points and ten rebounds in her 23 minutes of action. Kaitlyn Mileto followed with 11 points, while four other players recorded eight points each. The Cowgirls shot 32-61 (.525) from the field and out rebounded the Lady Hardrockers, 50-29. They also had 44 points in the paint and committed just 10 turnovers.

South Dakota Mines was led by Katie Strandholm with nine points and four rebounds. Devyn Asche came off the bench with seven points while Hillary Hawkins had a team high five rebounds. The Lady Hardrockers were 16-62 (.258) from the field and 4-26 (.154) from the perimeter.

A basket and free throw by Ashley Sickles put Wyoming on the board first which was answered with a quick two point basket by South Dakota Mines. Kaitlyn Mileto responded with five straight points to extend the lead to six, 8-2. The Lady Hardrockers would chip away at the lead by scoring the four of five to make it a three-point game, 9-6. After a basket by Chaundra Sewell, five unanswered by Mines brought the score even at 11 all. The Cowgirls came back with a 12-2 run started by a layup from Sewell to increase the lead back to double-figures, 23-13. A three-point field goal by Olivia Antilla ended a four minute drought for the Lady Hardrockers. Wyoming scored ten straight following that giving them a 17-point lead, 33-16. Hillary Hawkins would hit one of two free throws to end the run, but the Cowgirls still took a 37-20 lead into the locker room.

Out of the halftime break, the Cowgirls scored 10 of the first 12 points including three field goals from the perimeter to extend the lead to 25, 47-22. A basket by Hillary Hawkins gave the Hardrockers their 24th point of the game which was answered with eight straight by Wyoming to make it 55-24 with 13:57 remaining on the clock. The two teams would trade baskets over the next couple of minutes. With the score 59-28 in favor of the Cowgirls, they would run off 12 straight putting them ahead, 71-28. A three-point field goal by Hawkins ended a four minute drought by South Dakota Mines. It wasn't much of a contest after that as Wyoming outscored South Dakota Mines, 16-10, down the stretch to come away with the 87-38 victory.

The Cowgirls will open up 2013 Mountain West play next week on the road. They will travel to Idaho to face the Boise State Broncos, on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. Live stats can be followed on www.gowyo.com.
