Jan. 17, 2007
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team broke a two game losing streak with a dominating 71-47 victory against the San Diego State Aztecs (8-7 overall, 1-3 in the MWC) on Wednesday night in Laramie.
Four Cowgirls finished the game in double-figures including freshman Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded her first double-double of her career with 23 points and ten rebounds. She was 7-11 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line. Megan McGuffey finished with 16 points, while Hanna Zavecz chipped in 13 and Elisabeth Dissen had ten. Vandiver was the leading rebounder with ten followed by McGuffey with nine. Wyoming shot 23-54 (.426) from the field and 19-23 (.826) from the free throw line.
"I thought tonight when we were down 25-20 with 3:40 in the first half and we finished on an 11-0 run to go in to the locker room up 31-25 showed a lot by this team," said UW head coach Joe Legerski. "The steal by Aubrey right at the end of the half gave us a big lift. When you look at her play to finish with a double-double, it was really something we needed. It was an all-around solid game."
Jennifer Layton was the leading scorer for the Aztecs with 12. She was followed by Shannon Clay with nine and Shanna Demus with six. Clay was the leading rebounder with five. SDSU was 18-44 (.409) from the field and 8-10 (.800) from the free throw line.
The Cowgirls opened up the game by taking an early 5-0 lead. SDSU responded with two straight baskets to pull within one, 5-4. Wyoming scored four straight to make it a five point game, 9-4, but the Aztecs hit a shot to pull within three, 9-6. Both teams went over two minutes without scoring before a McGuffey basket broke the drought. The two teams played evenly over the next several minutes as the Cowgirls continued to lead. With the score 16-11 in favor of Wyoming, San Diego State went on a 5-0 run to tie it up at 16 all. The Cowgirls would score the next basket to go up 18-16, but the Aztecs scored 9 of 11 to take their largest lead of the half 25-20. Wyoming came back and closed out the half on an 11-0 run to take a 31-25 lead in to the locker room.
McGuffey led all scorers in the first half with ten followed by Vandiver with eight and Jodi Bolerjack with seven. Dissen was the leading rebounder with four. As a team, the Cowgirls were 10-30 (.333) from the field and 10-12 (.833) from the free throw line. San Diego State was led by Layton with eight points, while Demus chipped in six points and three rebounds. The Aztecs were 10-22 (.455) from the field, but committed 11 turnovers.
The Cowgirls extended their lead to nine, 37-28, out of the break with a 6-3 scoring run. That lead would grow to 14 as Wyoming scored seven of the next nine points as the Aztecs struggled on the offensive end. After a basket by SDSU's Kate Eveland, the Cowgirls hit two straight three point goals to go up by 18 with a little over 12 minutes remaining in the game. Both teams struggled from the field over the next several minutes as they combined for nine points, but Wyoming extended their lead to 23 points, 57-34. Unfortunately for San Diego State their shooting woes continued as they managed to score four points in a seven minute span. The lead was never in jeopardy as the Cowgirls went on to the 71-47 victory.
Wyoming will close out the weekend on Saturday, Jan. 20, against the TCU Lady Frogs. The game is set to tip off at 2:00 p.m.
