Jan. 18, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming basketball team put on an offensive show with a 62-point victory, 98-36, over the Air Force Academy Falcons on Wednesday night. It was the most points scored by the Cowgirls and fewest points giving up all season, plus the third largest margin of victory at home all-time. They now improve to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain West, while Air Force drops to 5-13 and 0-3 in conference action.
"I always believed that this team could shoot better than what we had all season," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I didn't think anything like this would come out. To shoot 61 percent from three point range is uncharacteristic of any team and yet tonight it became very easy to shoot. I'm really pleased with the way we started the game. We got the ball inside and scored and defensively we were active. Kayla Woodward has been playing very well over the last several games. It was also nice to see everyone get an opportunity to get on the court. Our second unit did a good job running the offense and it was important for them to learn."
Kayla Woodward led all scorers with a career high 28 points along with ten rebounds, five assists and five steals. Kaitlyn Mileto added 15 points while shooting 5-6 from beyond the arc. Ashley Sickles dropped 14 points and Chaundra Sewell recorded ten points and seven boards. Wyoming shot 39-61 (.639) from the field and 11-18 (.611) from beyond the arc. They also out rebounded Air Force 41-27.
Air Force was led by Alicia Leipprandt with 11 points followed by Dymond James with six and four rebounds. The Falcons were 13-56 (.232) from the field and 3-8 (.375) from the three-point line.
Two quick baskets in the first minute of the game by the Cowgirls put them up 4-0. A jumper from Dymond James got the Falcons on the board with 18:25. Wyoming responded with nine unanswered giving them a 13-2 advantage. Over the next couple of minutes, the teams traded scores as UW continued to lead 17-6. With 6:42 left in the half and two free throws by Dymond James made the score 34-18 in favor of the Cowgirls, it was a defensive and offensive show by Wyoming. They closed out the half scoring 17 straight points and held the Falcons scoreless to take a 51-18 lead into the lockerroom.
After Air Force hit one of two free throws out of the break, the Cowgirls scored the next two baskets to extend the lead to 36, 55-19. That would turn into a 28-1 run by Wyoming over the next 11 minutes to make the score 79-19 with 8:54 remaining in the game. Finally a three-point field goal by Jimi Blagowsky ended a ten minute drought for Air Force, which was followed by a basket by Jacko Salas to bring them to within 56 points, 81-25. Wyoming held the Falcons to 11 points the remaining 7:40 of the game to come away with the impressive 98-36 victory.
The Cowgirls will close out the week on Saturday, Jan. 21, against the Colorado State Rams. The game is set for 1:00 p.m. in Fort Collins.
