Cowgirl Basketball Struggles In Loss To San Diego State, 66-43

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (13-4 overall, 2-2 MW) had a tough shooting day as they fell 66-43 against the San Diego State Aztecs (12-5 overall, 2-2 MW) on Saturday afternoon in San Diego.
"At the end of the half we were encouraged with our play over the last ten minutes," said head "San Diego State stepped up their intensity defensively in the second half and at that time we needed to become more aggressive offensively. I thought Fallon and Chelan became aggressive and provided a spark to our team."
Wyoming was led by Kayla Woodward with 12 points while bringing down six rebounds in her 35 minutes of play. Chaundra Sewell followed with nine points and a team high seven rebounds, while Chelan Landry added six points. The Cowgirls were 17-51 (.333) from the field and 3-13 (.231) from beyond the arc.
San Diego State had four players in double-figures led by Courtney Clements. She had 18 points and six rebounds. Chelsea Hopkins recorded 14 points and eight rebounds. Malia Nahinu finished with 12 points and Erimma Amarikwa added 11. The Aztecs were 26-58 (.448) from the field and scored 40 points in the paint.
Alison Gorrell drove in and hit the first shot of the game for the Cowgirls. The Aztecs scored the next two baskets to give them a 4-2 advantage heading into the first media timeout. Out of the break, San Diego State scored the next five unanswered to extend the lead to seven, 9-2. A three-point field goal by Ashley Sickles would end a four minute scoring drought to make it 9-5. Over the next several minutes, SDSU ran off nine straight points to give them a double-figure lead, 18-5. A field goal by Kayla Woodward stopped the run and another cold spell by the Cowgirls. That basket would start a 9-5 run for Wyoming to bring them to within nine, 23-14. Courtney Clements scored on the next Aztecs possession and Wyoming responded with six straight to close the gap to seven, 27-20. The two teams would each hit a basket in the final two minutes as San Diego State took a 30-23 lead into the locker room.
Woodward led all scorers in the first half with ten points along with two rebounds. Chelan Landry and Chaundra Sewell each had four points while Sewell had a team high four rebounds. Wyoming shot 10-25 (.400) from the field and out rebounded the Aztecs 17-13. San Diego State was led by Courtney Clements with nine points and three rebounds. Erimma Amarikwa added six points and three rebounds as well. SDSU shot 12-27 (.444) from the field and scored 18 points off turnovers.
It took each team a couple of possessions to get anything going to begin the second half as each team scored a basket. With the score 32-25, the Aztecs scored a basket and two free throws to extend the lead back to 11, 36-25. A basket from Chelan Landry would stop a three-minute drought for the Cowgirls. Each team would score a basket next time down the court. With the score 38-29 in favor of the Aztecs, they ran off eight straight points to make it a 17-point game, 46-29, with 11:31 left in the game. Free throws from Sickles ended the run but San Diego State increased the lead back to 17, 50-33. Wyoming tried to chip away at the lead by scoring five of the next seven to pull within 14, 52-38. SDSU responded with nine straight points to increase the lead back to 23, 61-38. Unfortunately, the deficit was too much as the Cowgirls would fall 66-43 against the Aztecs.
The Cowgirls will be back at home on Wednesday, January 23, as they host the UNLV Lady Rebels. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Live stats can be followed on www.gowyo.com.
