Dent's 18 Points Lead Cowgirls to 82-56 win over Lady Rebels
Feb. 8, 2014
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Sophomore Marquelle Dent recorded her second straight double-figure scoring game to lead the Wyoming basketball team to a dominate 82-56 win over the UNLV Lady Rebels on Saturday afternoon. The Cowgirls are now 15-6 overall on the season and 6-4 in the Mountain West while the Lady Rebels fall to 9-14 overall and 6-5 in league play.
"It was definitely a consistent effort by this team tonight," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Marquelle got us off to a great start. She is very difficult to handle in the open court and when she can make that 12-15 foot jump shot you see her confidence grow. She can get things going in the transition and with the shooters on the side it's difficult for a defense to handle. We settled in and had to start rebounding. It's getting common to see a double-double from Fallon Lewis. I know how hard she works and was in a bit of foul trouble today, but still 15 points, 12 rebounds and 5-7 from the field. I was happy that we stepped up and hit some free throws in the first half, not in the second."
UNLV would score the first basket out of the break which was followed by a 6-0 run by Wyoming to pull them ahead by 16, 49-33. A field goal by Danielle Miller stopped a four minute scoreless drought for the Lady Rebels, which would start a small run to make it a 14-point contest, 53-39. Started by a Mileto three-pointer, the Cowgirls would increase their lead to 21, 65-44, with 7:00 minutes left in the game. Over the final stretch of the contest, UW played solid defense holding the Lady Rebels to just 12 points and built up the lead to come away with the 82-56 victory.
Dent finished the night with 18 points, seven assists and three steals. Kaitlyn Mileto followed with 16 points while Fallon Lewis recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 26-55 (.473) from the field and 21-31 (.677) from the free throw line. UW also recorded 32 points in the paint, 22 off turnovers and 20 bench points.
The Lady Rebels were led by Alana Cesarz with 16 points in her 29 minutes of action. Mia Bell added ten points, while Aley Rohde pulled down a team high nine rebounds. UNLV shot 20-61 (.328) from the field and out rebounded UW, 44-39.
It was fast paced and high scoring through the first four minutes as the two teams combined for 18 points with UNLV taking the early 11-7 lead. Out of the media timeout, the Cowgirls responded with a 15-2 run to give them a nine-point advantage, 22-13, with 11:55 in the first half. A basket by Rohde ended a three-minute scoring drought for UNLV. The Rebels would score the next seven to pull within five, 25-20. Wyoming would build the lead to 14, 37-23, with four minutes left in the half. Free throws by Haynes slowed down the Cowgirl run, but Wyoming continued to maintain the double-digit lead. They would take a 43-31 advantage heading into the locker room at half.
Dent led all scorers with 13 plus four assists. She was followed by Lewis with 11 and Kayla Woodward with eight. Lewis recorded a team high six boards as well. Wyoming shot 14-30 (.467) from the field, 5-10 (.500) from beyond the arc and 10-12 (.833) from the free throw line.
Wyoming returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12, against the San Diego State Aztecs. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. MT in San Diego.
