Cowgirls Upset No. 19 BYU in Provo, 57-56
Feb. 18, 2006
PROVO, Utah - Hanna Zavecz made a free throw with 13.4 seconds left to lift Wyoming to a 57-56 win over No. 19 Brigham Young on Saturday.
Zavecz, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists, was fouled by Ambrosia Anderson. She missed her first foul shot but made the second to give the Cowgirls a 57-56 lead.
The Cougars came down on offense and worked the ball to Anderson, but she missed a wild shot at the buzzer.
BYU (20-3, 10-2 Mountain West) led by as many as four several times in the first half and early in the second, but couldn't pull away.
Zavecz made a 3-pointer to give Wyoming (18-6, 8-5) its biggest lead at 51-43 with 5:24 to play. BYU responded by scoring the next six points, all on Anderson free throws, to get within two.
Dani Kubik's two free throws with 36.7 seconds left tied it at 56. Kubik led the Cougars with 21 points and eight rebounds.
"It's been an unbelievable week for the Cowgirl basketball program," said Wyoming head coach Joe Legerski. "We stepped up and played solid basketball for the entire game. Tonight we needed someone to step up and sophomore Hanna Zavecz did that with 20 points. Erin Hicks had ten, Megan finished with nine, while Dominique and Michelle both had eight points, so we had great support behind Hanna."
Anderson scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half for BYU.
The Cowgirls will only have one game next week as they travel to Ft. Collins to take on the Colorado State Rams, on Saturday, Feb. 25. The game time is set for 2:00 p.m. on CSTV.
