The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (14-10 overall, 5-6 in the MWC) wrapped up their road trip with a 70-66 loss to the UNLV Lady Rebels (14-10 overall, 5-5 in the MWC) on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.

Michelle Taylor led the Cowgirls in scoring with a career high 16 points followed by Hanna Zavecz and Ashley Elliott both with 13 and Erin Hicks with 12 points. Hicks and Zavecz both finished with five rebounds. The Cowgirls were 27-56 (.482) from the field and shot 9-20 (.450) from beyond the arc.

The Lady Rebels were led by Sheena Moore who had a game high 20 points, along with five assists. UNLV shot 23-50 (.460) from the field and 17-22 (.773) from the free throw line.

UNLV opened up the game and took an early 6-3 lead which was answered with an 11-1 run from the Cowgirls, giving them a seven-point advantage, 14-7. The Lady Rebels responded with a 10-4 run of their own to pull within one, 18-17, but Wyoming came back and scored the next eight of 12 to regain a 26-21 lead. With about three minutes left in the half, UNLV battled back with another 8-2 run to go back up by one, 29-28. The Cowgirls closed out the half with two three-point field goals and managed to take a 34-31 lead in to the locker room.

Hanna Zavecz and Erin Hicks led the Cowgirls in scoring in the first half with eight points each followed by Michelle Taylor with seven and Kristen Lenhardt with five. Zavecz was the leading rebounder with three. As a team, they were 13-26 (.500) from the field and 7-11 (.636) from beyond the arc.

UNLV was led into the break by Sheena Moore with eight points followed by Brittney Thomas and Ran Dee Henry with six. Henry also brought down four rebounds in the first half. The Lady Rebels were 9-21 (.429) from the field and 9-11 (.818) from the charity stripe.

The Lady Rebels stormed out the second half and scored the first eight points to go up 39-31, while the Cowgirls went over four minutes before getting their first basket. Wyoming pulled to within three, 41-38, but UNLV responded with an 8-2 run to take a nine point advantage, 49-40. That lead would extend in to double-digits as Wyoming continued to struggle from the field. Despite being down, the Cowgirls continued to battle and went on a 9-4 run to pull within five, 59-54, but a Sheena Moore three-point field goal gave the Lady Rebels an eight point lead. Wyoming made one final push as Ashley Elliott scored ten straight points to pull them within one, 65-64. Unfortunately, they couldn't complete the comeback as UNLV earned the 70-66 victory.

The Cowgirls will be at home next week as they host the Colorado State Rams, on Thursday night, at 7:00 p.m.
