The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2011-12 exhibition season with an impressive 67-46 victory over the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves, on Friday night, in Laramie.

Two Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by freshmen Kayla Woodward and Kaitlyn Mileto. Woodward finished with a double-double recording 20 points and 12 rebounds. Mileto followed by with 21 points and Chaundra Sewell added ten rebounds. Wyoming shot 22-58 (.379) from the field and 15-19 (.789) from the free throw line.

CSU-Pueblo was led by Erica Hicks with 16 points, while Paige Ramm added nine points. The Thunderwolves were 18-56 (.321) from the field.

"For the first game, it showed with our youth," said head coach Joe Legerski. "I think we came down and knocked down our first 3-pointers and then over the next four or five minutes we don't score. That's just going to be how it goes until this group figures it out. I really enjoyed the effort tonight. I thought they played extremely hard for 40 minutes. I thought Chaundra Sewell gave us extra chances with 10 total rebounds. Kayla and Kaitlyn were both threats to be able to shoot it from three and put it on the floor. I just tell them to keep getting better each and every day."

The Cowgirls started off quickly jumping out to a 9-2 lead. They would score four of the next six points to extend their lead to nine, 13-4. Out of a media timeout, CSU-Pueblo hit a three-point field goal to cut into the lead. That would start a 7-0 run to pull them to within two, 13-11. A layup by Kaitlyn Mileto ended an almost five minute drought for Wyoming. They would score the next basket and then both teams went several minutes without scoring. The Thunderwolves ended their drought with a three-point shot while Chelan Landry drove for a layup. Four straight points by CSUP pulled them to within one, 19-18, but Kayla Woodward hit a shot to give the Cowgirls a 22-18 advantage. CSU-Pueblo continued to battle back as they went on another six point run to take their first lead of the game 24-22. Wyoming closed out the half with five straight to take a 27-24 lead into the lockerroom.

Out of the break, a shot by Paige Ramm tied the score at 27 all. A Kaitlyn Mileto three-point play started a 5-0 run to put the Cowgirls ahead six, 33-27, which they extended to nine, 37-28. CSUP closed the gap with a 7-2 run to make it 39-35. The two teams played even over the next several minutes as Wyoming continued to hold a four point lead, 47-43. The momentum seemed to shift as the Cowgirls scored nine unanswered to give them a double-figure lead, 56-43. A free throw by the Thunderwolves ended the run and then a basket closed the margin to ten, 56-46. It was never close as the Cowgirls held CSU-Pueblo scoreless the final 4:55 to win the game 67-46.

Wyoming will play one final exhibition game before opening the regular season. They will host Western State, Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:00 p.m.
