Cowgirl Basketball Opens Up Exhibition Season With Victory
Nov. 2, 2010
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2010-11 exhibition season with an impressive 79-45 victory over the Colorado Christian Cougars, on Tuesday night, in Laramie.
Four Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by Aubrey Vandiver. She recorded 15 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes of play. Hillary Carlson and Chaundra Sewell each finished with 14 points while Jade Kennedy added ten points. Wyoming shot 28-66 (.424) from the field and 9-25 (.360) from beyond the arc.
Colorado Christian was led by Bre McBeth with a team high ten points in 16 minutes, while Christina Whitelaw recorded a game high ten rebounds. The Cougars were 17-77 (.221) from the field, while committing 22 turnovers.
"With a first exhibition game, you take a look at the positives but then you know how far you still have to work," said head coach Joe Legerski. "One of the bright spots was the play of our bench, which was going to be a big question mark for us. We needed to see how players like Bec, Chaundra, Ashley, would play, and I thought they did very well. Mistakes were made but the effort was there. I talked with them that if they make a mistake I will live with it, but make sure you are playing hard.
"I also look that we had four players in double-figures and a rebound away from getting double-doubles. That will be important for this team, because we're going to need a number of people to step up and play. That's what happened tonight especially in the second half."
Wyoming started off strong by taking a 7-0 lead to begin the first half. It took the Cougars almost three minutes before their first basket. With the score 9-5 in favor of Wyoming, both teams went several minutes without scoring until a CCU basket made it 9-7. An Aubrey Vandiver three-point field goal ended the three minute drought for Wyoming which started a 9-3 run to put them up 18-10. The two teams played evenly over the next four minute stretch as the Cowgirls continued to maintain their lead, 23-15. Eight out of the Cowgirls next 13 points to close out the half were scored by sophomore Chaundra Sewell to give Wyoming a 36-25 lead going into the lockerroom.
The Cowgirls scored the first five points of the second half to give them a 16-point advantage, 41-25. Colorado Christian had a four minute scoring drought before hitting their first basket. Wyoming would only increase that lead as they scored the next 20 of 26 points which extended their cushion to 28, 61-33. Their largest lead of the game was 34, the margin they would win by with a final of 79-45.
Wyoming will open up regular season play on Friday, November 12 against the Denver Pioneers. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
