LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team wrapped up their exhibition season with a 61-46 win over Western State, on Friday night, in Laramie.
Four Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by freshman Kaitlyn Mileto with 14 points and three assists. Kaylee Hoffman followed with 13 points while Ashley Sickles and Kayla Woodward each added ten points. Chaundra Sewell finished with a team high 11 rebounds plus eight points and seven assists. Wyoming shot .457 (21-46) from the field and brought down 39 rebounds.
The Mountaineers were led by Nikki Trujillo with 19 points and three rebounds. Taylor Murray recorded eight points while three other players finished with four points each. The Mountaineers shot 16-62 (.258) from the field.
"Two exhibition games, both very different and I think that's what you look for in one game to the next to learn more about your team," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Tonight, we had to show a little bit of toughness, which I thought we were about to do. It was good to see four players in double figures and one of the other things was that we shot better from the field. We worked the ball inside and had more people involved which is a sign of a team improving."
The Cowgirls scored the first four points early in the game. A basket by Kayla Woodward gave Wyoming a 6-0 lead going into the first media timeout. After another basket by the Cowgirls, Western State finally got on the board with a free throw at the 14:37 mark. That would start a small run for the Mountaineers to pull them to within five, 13-8. Free throws by Kaitlyn Mileto and a three-point shot by Kayla Woodward extended the lead back to ten, 18-8. Western State continued to battle and closed the gap to six, 22-16, with an 8-3 run. Five straight points by Wyoming gave them a double-figure advantage, 27-16. They would take a 36-21 lead into the lockerroom by score the final 9 of 14 to close out the half.
Western State scored the first six of eight points to begin the second half making it 38-27. The Cowgirls responded with eight straight points to give them a 19-point advantage, 46-27. The Mountaineers hit a three-point shot to end the run, which would start a 7-3 run for them to close the gap to 49-35. After each team scored a basket, they went several minutes without scoring. Kaitlyn Mileto hit a basket for the Cowgirls to give them a 53-37 advantage and then Western State scored five unanswered to pull within 12, 54-42. Wyoming's lead was never in jeopardy as they went on to win 61-46.
Wyoming will open up the regular season next week at home hosting the Utah State Aggies. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
