LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team concluded their exhibition season with a 31 point win, 76-45, over the Regis Rangers, on Monday night in Laramie.
Two Cowgirls finished the night in double-figures led by senior Ashley Sickles. She scored a game high 17 points, while shooting 7-14 from the field in 23 minutes of play. Alison Gorrell added ten points, while Chaundra Sewell finished with ten rebounds. Wyoming shot 29-73 (.397) from the field and 11-13 (.846) from the free throw line.
Regis was led by Sarah Fenney who recorded a team high 14 points and eight rebounds. She was followed by Nicole Brzeczek with ten points. The Rangers were 16-49 (.327) from the field, but committed 24 turnovers.
"We were able to accomplish what we wanted to tonight and that was a better defensive effort," said head coach Joe Legerski. "Regis puts a lot of pressure on you with putting the ball on the floor. We did a nice job responding to it in the first half. I thought the veterans came out and played well both offensively and defensively. Ashley came out and got us going early. It's hard sometimes to stay in a ball game when you are playing limited minutes. Chaundra Sewell was leaps and bounds a head of everyone on the glass."
Wyoming jumped out quickly to begin the game as they took a 9-2 lead as Ashley Sickles scored seven of the points. Free throws by Tae'lor Purdy stopped the scoring drought for the Rangers as the Cowgirls took a 9-4 lead into the first media timeout. Out of the break, UW extended their lead to double-figures with seven straight points to make it 16-4 with 12:25 left in the half. A basket by Sara Feeney started a 9-2 run for Regis, closing the gap to five points, 18-13. A three-point play from Ashley Sickles ended the run and a five minute scoring drought by the Cowgirls. With the score 21-13 in favor of UW, they closed out the half scoring 17 of the final 18 points to take a 37-14 lead into the lockerroom.
The Cowgirls went on another 5-0 run to begin the second half to extend the lead to 42-14. A basket by Kara Larson would end a seven minute drought for the Rangers. They would hit a three-point field goal the next time down the court to close the gap to 25, 44-19. Wyoming responded with a 14-7 run to increase the lead back to 34, 60-26. Over the next several minutes, the two teams traded baskets with the Cowgirls continuing to lead. In the end the deficit was too much for the Rangers to overcome as Wyoming went on to the 76-45 victory.
Wyoming will open up the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9, against the Idaho Vandals. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium.
